The Esk Estuary. The Esk Estuary.
Ravenglass is favoured more by the leisure boats and the sand banks along the rivers Mite and Irt are a resting ground for many yachts and pleasure craft. Here a sailor finishes off the last of the day's jobs before putting his boat to bed for the night.

Just to the north of Ravenglass is Wasdale. A quiet valley that runs from the sea up to the foot of Great Gable and Scafell Pike. Unspoilt by the passage of time the view down this valley has hardly changed in centauries. The field system is quite remarkable, it makes a strange pattern of irregular shapes but there is method in this madness. In order to farm the stones had to be moved from the land, these were piled up and then eventually made in to walls pen in the animals. The workers wouldn't want to move the stone further than they had to, so they would join the piles together, eventually using most of them up. You can still see some heaps as wider sections or bulges in the walls in this view from the top of Great Gable in the head of the valley.

High Yewdale.High Yewdale.
Just below Tarn Hows to the west is High Yewdale farm, it is a fine example of how life used to be even up to fifty years ago. The traditional white washed farm house, with the horse in the front paddock. On the left is the old barn with the rare wooden spinning gallery raised above the yard. In the background you can see the Tilberthwaite Fells where the sheep would have been grazed and hefted for generations.

The Duddon valley has to be one of the most beautiful valleys in the south lakes. Most people who visit never realise they have done so. The top end is the valley between Hard Knott and Wrynose pass. This is where the three old counties that made up modern Cumbria are joined. The valley then works its way southwest towards the sea in the distance. The valley also hides one of the old packhorse bridges spanning a beautiful deep pool with blue green water that is a favourite with bathers on a sunny summers day.

Ravenglass, The Esk Estuary.Ravenglass, The Esk Estuary.
On the western fringes of Cumbria where the Lake District touches the sea is Ravenglass, a sleepy little village on the Esk Estuary where fishing boats lie in the evening light. It has been a port for many thousands of years favoured by the Romans and in later years for the mines in the Esk valley where the goods were brought down by the railway, now the 'Lal'ratty', a narrow gauge line that winds its way form the sea to the village of Boot in the mountains.
