WindermereWindermere
Windermere is the largest of all the lakes. it is nearly impossible to see it all from any one point but the side of Loughrigg fell gives a sense of the long ribbon disappearing into the distance. Ambleside is on the left and the river Brathay in the centre entering the lake at Waterhead. The flotilla of boat at their and the low lying hills in the background, you get a sense of how open and wide the landscape is in this area of the Lake district.

Windermere Windermere
Down on the foreshore at water head you get a feeing of the peace and tranquillity that reigns over the Lake District in early morning, with all the boats lined up in the gentle flow of the Brathay in to the lake and the low morning sunlight picking out the bright white boats I was not the only person to take the chance of relaxing in this wondrous location.

Half way down Windermere are a series of small island that make a haven for countless boats on there moorings. In the distance you can the oddly named Yoke on the Right and the more pronounced bell and final high street on the left.

River BrathayRiver Brathay
The slow moving river has a feel like no other waterway in the park. Here a wide-open pool edged by reeds and Lilly pads stays motionless in the morning light. The glacial moraines give high vantage points for the copes of trees that are surrounded by a network of meadows, a timeless landscape you have to admit.

From the boat house at RydalFrom the boat house at Rydal
As you travel from Ambleside north on the main road on a late summer morning, you will catch this view of Rydal Water. The lake is often shrouded in mist and when it is, it has an almost magical feel. Heron Island, the largest in the lake, is silhouetted against the morning sun. I can think of no better place to be.

Dawn on Rydal WaterDawn on Rydal Water
Looking west along Rydal Water you can see the many little islands that go to make this one of the most picturesque areas in the Lake District. In autumn the valleys here are often shrouded in mist until late in the morning. But when the mist lifts, it does so very quickly -- 10 minutes before this photograph was taken, it was impossible to see clearly more than 20 feet in any direction.

Loughrigg Tarn and the LangdalesLoughrigg Tarn and the Langdales
Nestled at the foot of the Langdale Valley, up above Skelwith Bridge is Loughrigg Tarn. This beautiful pocket of the lakes is a haven of peace and tranquillity. Let your gaze wander over the water lilies and the white geese to the Langdale Pikes beyond.

Summer in the LangdalesSummer in the Langdales
This area has been important for centuries. Above on the right, you will find the ancient quarries which provided a ready supply of high quality stone for axe heads many thousands of years ago. These were sold far and wide and have been found all over the UK in different archaeological sites. Down and to the left (just out of the picture) is a large rock with ancient rock carvings. Less than a minute from the road, it's a site well worth a look.

Dungeon GillDungeon Gill
On the Side of the Langdale Pikes is a well known, if not frequently visited waterfall called Dungeon Gill. It Name is synonymous with the Hotel and bar at its foot, as this is the gateway to the Langdales for most walkers. The Gill tumbles its way down the hillside in a series of waterfalls and pools, with it most spectacular moment as it plunges about seventy feet into a ravine. The overhanging cliffs on each side highlight the drama of this place. Just out of the top of this frame there is a large boulder some twenty feet across that has been jammed in the top of the gorge about one hundred feet above the stream below giving a tunnel like feel.

Esthwaite WaterEsthwaite Water
To the south of Hawkshead is the small lake of Esthwaite Water, often an inspiration to Wordsworth and a child and as a man

Today the lake is a peaceful haven for fishermen plying the way up and down the lake with electric motorboats so as not to disturb the peace.

Grassmere morningGrassmere morning
The first lake on the river Rothay is Grassmere, one of the smaller lakes in the Lake District but one of its most famous. On its shores is dove cottage, home of William Wordsworth. On a September morning the warm water of the lake forms mist in the cold night air, with a view like this you can understand why the location has always been a favourite with poets and artists for centauries.

Loughrigg TerraceLoughrigg Terrace
Halfway up Loughrigg fell at the south end of Grassmere is an ancient path called the Terrace. It's a great place to sit and admire the view, especially in late spring with the hawthorn trees plastered with blossom. I can remember the warmth of the sun on my face and the gentle background music of birds and sheep on the fell. Looking north you can see the only gap in the Lakeland mountain range, Dunmail Raise, dividing the Langdale range of mountains on the left from the Helvellyn range on the right. The view here is made up of Seat Sandal, Great Rigg and Heron Pike.

HawksheadHawkshead
This is a charming village situated between Windermere and Coniston, just at the head of Esthwaite water. The Village has change very little since the 17th century. It consists of a network of little streets and passage ways opening out into various squares and courtyards. Since the days when William Wordsworth and his brother attended school here a few more coffee shops and outdoor shops have appeared, but the charm of the village still remains.

St Michael's Church stands above the village and has views over the village and valley to the southern end of the Helvellyn hills and Kirkstone pass.
