The Rannerdale BluebellsThe Rannerdale Bluebells
It is reputed that ancient Lakeland was the only part of England that wasn't captured by the Normans. The tale tells of the troops of Earl Bhoetar (hence the name Buttermere, Bhoetar's lake). He claimed a great victory against the Norman army by drawing them into the dead end valley of Rannerdale, next to Crummock water. There he ambushed them. It is also said that there is a bluebell here for every soldier killed. It's hard to tell how true the story is, but it is a great story in a fabulous and believable setting. One thing that cannot be denied is the amazing beauty of this valley in Spring when the carpet of bluebells covers everything. It should be noted that it is rare to see this woodland flowers out in the open, making this place even more special.

Scale ForceScale Force
This is the largest waterfall in the Lake District. Scale beck tumbles down the steep slopes of Red Pike in to the Buttermere valley. But at this point, it disappears into a crevice in the rock and the water is forced to freefall over one hundred feet down a narrow chasm making it the tallest waterfall in England. It was a wet day when I visited and the stream was high, but that was nothing compared to the force of water that must have been needed to move the trees and boulders in the stream bed. Part of me would like to see the waterfall in full flow, but I wouldn't like to be standing on the rock where I took this photograph.

above the little bridge at Ashness, through the trees is a little car park, and just a few stops away is surprise view, overlooking Derwent water, Keswick and Skiddaw it has a Wonderful view on almost any day. The small oak trees that line the steep valley sides have changed to a brilliant orange with the first of the winters frosts.

Mellbreak from Crummock WaterMellbreak from Crummock Water
From the tranquil south shore of Crummock Water you can see the sugar- dusted profile of Mellbreak. This is one of the Lake Districts quieter mountains. Unlike most Cumbrian fells it stands alone. It is a lengthy walk in and its steep formidable sides attract only the most dedicated and hardened walkers.

Grassmoor and Rannerdale from Crummock WaterGrassmoor and Rannerdale from Crummock Water
A late afternoon in September gave me the chance to capture this spectacular view. It stretches from the boathouse in Lanthwaite woods surrounded by amazing autumn colours to the imposing Grassmoor with its weather beaten west face then on down to Rannerdale and Rannerdale knots, where the road lurches round the corner into Buttermere. Crossing the valley in the mist, you can see High Stile and Red Pike, and finally shafts of sunlight poking over the shoulder of Mellbreck.

For many years these Scots pines have stood at the top of Buttermere overlooking Gatesgarth beck. Towering above the flat land at the top of the lake is High Crag, Haystacks and Fleetwith Pike, all surrounding Warnscale Bottom. Look closely and you can just see the cloud creeping over the crags in the middle of the picture, showing how different he weather can be between valley floor and mountain top.

Derwentwater -- January sunset at Keswick boat landingsDerwentwater -- January sunset at Keswick boat landings
A calm and clear winter's day in the Lake District can be one of the best times of the year. The driving rain and bitter cold is soon forgotten as dramatic views seem to appear on all sides. Here, a beautiful January day is topped off by a stunning sunset, outlining the peaks of Catbells on the left and then Causey Pike, Barrow and Grisedale Pike on the right.

Sunrise from Hawes End Sunrise from Hawes End
Anyone familiar with Beatrix Potter's Tale of Squirrel Nutkin might recognise the scene above. In the story, the squirrels would paddle their rafts from Lingholme Woods on the left out to the long dark shape of St Herbert's Island in the centre to see the Wise Old Owl inside her tree. Now, only ducks paddle in the lake -- but red squirrels can still be found throughout the woods of the north Lakes.

Catbells from Friar's Crag Catbells from Friar's Crag
Just a few minutes from Keswick town centre, you wander down to Friar's crag overlooking the widest lake in the Lake District, Derwent Water. In winter, the old bracken that covers the flanks of Catbells glows orange at first light, contrasting vividly with the cold blue frost in rest of the valley. Running left from Catbells you can see Maiden Moor rising into High Spy and then dropping off into Borrowdale

Winter over Bassenthwaite Lake Winter over Bassenthwaite Lake
This dramatic view can usually be glimpsed by travellers on the A66 but so few stop, even in the lay-by, to give it a second glance. Here you get an unusual view of the double outlines of Ullock Pike with Skiddaw just showing over the top. The distinctive shape of Dodd Wood on the right, with the faint detail of the Helvellyn range behind, allow many who know the north Lakes to identify it easily.

Looking north from Ashness landings on Derwent Water the distinctive outline of the Skiddaw range stands high above Keswick. The deforested Dodd Wood is on the left with the 'pimple' shape of Ullock pike on the Long Side shoulder, then onto the rounded dome of Carl Side. In the middle is the south end of the ridge that makes up the Skiddaw summit. Then onto Little Man and finally Jenkin Hill as it drops back into the mist.

The River Derwent with reflections of SkiddawThe River Derwent with reflections of Skiddaw
With most of the visitors coming to the Lake District in the summer months few get to see the snow capped peaks of winter. It gives an extra drama to the hills, a greater sense of height and foreboding. Or maybe its just the days when the sun shines on the snow covered slopes are so welcome after weeks of grey driving rain.

Loweswater hides in the most North-westerly edge of the Lake District. It is a small lake which empties into Crummock water under the gaze of Burnbank and Darling fell. Tucked into the southern shore is Holme Wood, Famous for its bluebells in spring and it's autumn colours. Here it is catching the sun on a winters morning.

Tucked away at the north end of Bassenthwaite Lake is a small woodland walk. In amongst the willows on the foreshore you can catch a glimpse of the lake and valley beyond. The view is always unexpected. I found this mirror calm image in the afternoon light in January.
